Being afraid of dental visits is more common than you might think. Many people from all age groups experience anxiety about undergoing procedures, sitting in a dental chair, and even entering a dentist’s office. As a result, sedation dentistry has become a popular option for those who want to keep their dental appointments without having feelings of fear.
Why are people afraid of the dentist?
There are a number of reasons that people may be afraid of going to the dentist. Some common ones include previous bad dental experiences, horror stories heard from others or seen in the media, overly sensitive teeth, phobia of needles or other equipment, and severe gag reflexes.
What is sedation dentistry?
This branch of dentistry allows patients to have dental checkups and procedures performed without the trauma that accompanies fearing the appointments. As the name implies, sedatives are used to calm the patient before any dental work begins. This means that drugs are administered to promote relaxation, but usually not to the point of putting the patient to sleep.
Are there different types of sedation?
There are varying levels of sedation possible, depending upon the patient’s individual needs as well as dental needs. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is widely used. It is inhaled and can be used alone or to supplement local anesthesia, especially for those who don’t like needles. This type of sedation decreases the gag reflex and is reversible during use. It is popular for minor procedures or for lower levels of anxiety. Patients who require heavier sedation may opt for moderate sedation, which is administered through an IV injection through the arm. It takes effect quickly and causes drowsiness to the point of sometimes falling asleep. However, the patient is awakened easily and can answer commands or questions. Patients who have moderate sedation should have a ride home and adult supervision for several hours afterwards.
